It was fantastic! NO, spectacular! NO, sublime, elating, euphoric! It was the best day of our debating careers yet! I was really hoping I could write some nice story and then hit you all with the grand news, but I cannot hold it! AFTER JUST OVER A MONTH OF DEBATING, TWO NRPS DEBATERS PLACED IN THE TOP TEN ON THE NOVICE LMW REGIONALS TOURNAMENT!!!!! Words simply fail at expressing my pride, and sheer elation at the fact. The top 6 speakers get to progress to Provincials, unbelievably, Mila placed 6th and Judy missed Provincials by the skin of the teeth, scoring to place 8th. But still, eighth is pretty impressive, considering how many novices there were at the tourney. So an enormous congratulations to Mila, who will be going to Provincials! Come out and support her, guys!
Mila and Judy were novices in grade 7, competing against novices in grade 8 - and they still did well! Moreover, they mostly competed against private schools, with long-standing traditions of success in debate.
Four teams of eight debaters came into the tournament with some preparations for the topic BIRT police must wear audio/visual recording devices. Definitely a relevant topic! These four teams (Sidd and Prakrit, Richard and Leo, Mila and Vlada and Judy and Ali) also debated the impromptu resolution of THS child labor. It was a really hard topic, but with their incredible debating skills, a stroke of luck and their coach's debate guide, they all debated it excellently! Each and every one of these debaters has so much potential and such a bright future ahead of them. I cannot wait to see what extraordinary achievements these debaters will reach soon.
All of them have only started debating in December, and a lot of them are in grade 6, that means they have 2 more years of competition in the novice category! In a couple years, NRP will be unstoppable! They will be taking up all the top spots, and the club will have earned an incredible reputation!
Look out private schools, NRP is coming to knock you from the top spots!
